Get Involved This Summer!

This long period of economic hardship in the U.S. has been accompanied by at least one positive trend: an increasing mood of charity among Americans. Many people are volunteering their time and energy to positive causes. If you wish to contribute personally, there are many ways to provide assistance to those in need. One way to offer support to the well-being of the community is to participate in fundraisers like awareness walks and events. Below are a few suggested activities. To help raise awareness for mental health issues and reduce the stigma of mental illnesses during May--Mental Health Month--local chapters of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) across the country are holding fundraising walks. NAMI offers a guide to the walks online. June is Men's Health Month. A fun way to get involved is to plan a workplace €œWear Blue Day.€ Set a fundraising goal and have participants wear blue on the day you have chosen. Blue prostate cancer awareness pins could be sold as part of the fundraiser. National UV Safety Month is July. This is a great time to remind everyone that skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States and ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun are the main cause of skin cancer. A fun way to participate in raising UV awareness is to plan a tree planting ceremony. This will provide a place to find protection, in the shade, from harmful UV rays. To learn more about awareness campaigns and events, visit the National Health Information Center online. Now, more than ever, is a great opportunity to offer your support to the welfare of the nation and the world.
